I believe the best paintings invite the viewer to participate and draw from their own visual experiences to finish the story. Choosing what to state clearly and what to leave up to interpretation is as important as the color or subject to me.  I decided that this painting would be about the turmoil of sky and atmosphere.  The storm was more of an event than a specific place, although it is a fairly close rendering of the place as well.  It is satisfying to me when people appreciate the painting and suggest it is a different place entirely.
